A Review of Literature and Practice.
Equity is …concerned with creating equal opportunities
for health and with bringing health differentials
down to the lowest level possible.
Elizabeth
Harris and Sarah Simpson (2003 p. 209)
Equity
in health is a theory and practice that rests on
a value system that incorporates principles of social
justice. Therefore, it is one that is contested
as value systems are diverse and in any one group
of people many different views about what is fair
and equitable will exist.
It is evident that while the health of Australians
is improving, gaps are growing, and there is greater
distance between the wealthiest in our society and
the poorest.
Those who are socially and economically disadvantaged
carry a greater share of the burden of disease and
ill health and this is most noticeable in Australia’s
indigenous people.
