Diversify your bookshelf

January 6, 2021

Earlier this week we set your minds thinking about how you might act for gender equity in 2021. A gender equity resolution, if you will!

This one is close to our hearts – it’s no secret that we love a good read. And not just because it offers a chance for escapism, without the fuss of booking tickets or organising border permits!

A diverse reading list, consisting of literature by women and gender-diverse people from all life stages, backgrounds, cultures and experiences is a great way of understanding different perspectives on the world, challenging unconscious bias, and stretching that all-important brain muscle. (And if you belong to a bookclub, you could suggest a few diverse reads to your group and be responsible for a LOT of brain-stretching!)

So, to diversify your reading in 2021, why not get started by:
📚 following @blackfulla_bookclub on Instagram for some great recommendations of books by Indigenous Australian authors;
📚 checking out #disabilityreads on Instagram for monthly reviews and discussions of literature by writers with disabilities, hosted @carlyfindlay and @jouljet; and
📚 having a peek at the patriarchy-busting reading list our friends at @ywcaaustralia put together not so long ago. You can find it via the link in our bio.
