This is the question we asked, in partnership with our favourite visionary alliance of leaders, thinkers and practitioners at Australia reMADE, when talking with communities in rural Victoria about what’s needed to keep them safe and thriving in a disaster-prone world.
Care through Disaster: A new lens on what’s needed to survive and thrive in tumultuous times is the first report released by WHGNE and Australia reMade exploring how we can better set ourselves up to care and be cared for well, especially during times of deep disruption. When business- as- usual falls away, what works and what doesn’t? What needs to already be in place so people can continue to get by, recover and thrive?

Since the release of Care through Disaster: A new lens for what’s needed to survive and thrive in tumultuous times, WHGNE and Australia reMADE have released a second report, Care through Disaster in Practice: A toolkit for leaders, from the citizen to the state. This toolkit aims to provide practical support for putting the recommendations to come out of the Care through Disaster consultations to action.
In March 2025 the Care through Disaster Community of Practice launches to engage leaders and practitioners in the collaborative effort to build an infrastructure of care so that communities have everything they need to care and be cared for before, during and after disaster.
